Description

When your Campervan or Motorhome – or your River Cruiser or Canal Boat for that matter – is parked (or moored up 😉 ), it is a good idea to have a way to keep the Starter Battery maintained with a reasonable charge.

Modern vehicles especially can have quite a drain on the Starter Battery and a week or two of sitting around can have consequences for the health of your Starter Battery. Leaving the van plugged in on the drive way or your boat on a Marina can be an option of course, but if you don’t have a driveway, or are moored on a towpath or bank that is likely not an option and does rely on you having a setup that charges the starter battery from your mains charger.

Solar is a great way to keep a charge going into the Leisure Battery, but rarely will do anything for the Starter Battery.

So what is the answer?  The AMT-12!  The First photo shows the connections, the Second notes what they are  (there are also labels on the side of the device as well)

The Ablemail AMT-12 Battery Maintainer is an microprocessor-controlled intelligent Battery Maintainer, compatible with both Lead Acid Batteries and Lithium Batteries, and with vehicles with either Standard Alternators or Smart Alternators.

This unit will trickle charge the Starter Battery at a pulsed 3A level whilst the Leisure Battery is at a predefined voltage level (dependant on the setting selected on the AMT-12) for optimum maintenance, and if the Starter Battery drops to a a lower preset level, the Maintainer kicks in again automatically to prevent damage to the battery.

We think it is essential to look after the Batteries in your vehicle or your boat, and this is why the AMT-12 Battery Maintainer can be an essential weapon in the arsenal of Battery Monitoring and Maintanance, complete with all cabling needed to add this kit to an existing B2B or split charge Relay system, so all you will need is basic tools.

Note that this product, like many others we sell, are part of a continuous improvement to deliver better flexibility and features.  In the case of the AMT-12 as shown above, the latest edition includes the capability to connect a Bluetooth Controller/Monitor to it via the 4-pin data connector, 8 selectable programmes  (initially this was limited to 4, which of course is still 3 more than the alternatives from other manufacturers!), and the connection method has changed from the M6 studs to spade tags on the latest model shown above

The Ablemail AMT-12 from Wildebus also comes complete with cabling to suit to make it as easy as possible to install.  You get 3 wires of 300mm length – One 0V (Black) plus a +VE for the Starter and a +VE for the Leisure  (Blue and White).   The Blue wire also had a flying lead that can be used as a handy source of 12V power to use for either reprogramming the unit if desired or as an override connection (connect to Faston Switch 2 for override).   We supply 3 x Ring Terminals ready to fit if connecting via a AMC B2B or Relay device;  The bare wires are suitable if connecting via an Orion B2B or EBL for example.   We can supply longer length leads if required if, for example, you need a longer lead for one of the battery +VEs

(note that Colours specified are subject to change if required)

The AMT12-2 is a “Fit and Forget” Battery Maintainer but it still offers configuration and enhancements well beyond its competition with options for those folk who like to adapt and adjust their installations further.

AMT12-2 and ABB-07 Combo Kit

We can also offer a combo offering of the AMT12-2 Battery Maintainer and the ABB-07 Bluetooth Module.

The first screenshot on the left shows the configuration options available, which allow you to fine tune the configuration beyond the 8 presets selections as well as monitoring the function of the Battery Maintainer plus using a brand new feature now available on the latest versions of the AMT – that is the ability to be able to remotely turn the override on and off via the app.

The next pair of Screenshots below are in the “Manager” Screen and let you see the status of the Maintainer , whether it is on or not, the voltages of the Vehicle Battery and the Secondary (Leisure) Battery.

You also see here the Override Button, showing Red when turned off with a message to press to turn on, and then in Green when on, with a message to turn it off.

Purchasing the AMT12-2 and the ABB-07 together will save over buying the two parts seperately – you will get a £5 discount on both the AMT itself and the ABB-07 Module.

AMT12-2 and Switch Kit

We also have a Switch Kit that allows a simple override on demand of the programmed setup to run the AMT permanently on occasion if needed.   This is a very handy feature that can be added in at low cost.   This is designed to integrate to the standard AMT wiring we supply and includes a CBE Mount ready for matching with common existing Motorhome fittings.

Settings and Programming the AMT12-2

Setting Selection

The available settings are as follows:

  1. Standard Alternator + Lead Battery; Standard parasitic drain
  2. Standard Alternator + Lithium Battery; Standard parasitic drain
  3. Smart Alternator + Lithium Battery; Standard parasitic drain
  4. Smart Alternator + Lead Battery; Standard parasitic drain
  5. Standard Alternator + Lead Battery; Higher parasitic drain
  6. Standard Alternator + Lithium Battery; Higher parasitic drain
  7. Smart Alternator + Lithium Battery; Higher parasitic drain
  8. Smart Alternator + Lead Battery; Higher parasitic drain

Standard Alternator (1,2,5,6) = Vehicle Battery goes to 12.8V;  Smart Alternator (3,4,7,8) = Vehicle Battery charges to 12.4V
Lithium Battery (2,3,6,7) = AMT Activates when Battery >13.5V; Lead Battery (1,4,5,8)= AMT Activates when Battery >13.0V
Standard Drain (settings 1-4) = AMT is ON for 6 seconds, OFF for 15 seconds; Higher Drain (5-8) = AMT is ON for 10s, OFF for 15s

Whilst 12V is applied to Faston Switch 2, the programmed mode is overridden during that time and the AMT cycle is 9 seconds ON, 1 second OFF. This is in fact how the optional Switch Kit is connected up to activate that program override.

Reprogramming the AMT12-2

If you need to reprogramme the AMT12-2 to a different setting, simply do the following on the AMT Battery Maintainer (in this exact sequence):

    1. Remove Cable from 0V Spade Terminal
    2. Connect Flying lead to SW1 (terminal next to green plug)
    3. Reconnect Cable to 0V. The LED will then flash green a number of times to match the setting it is currently programmed to
    4. Within 40 seconds, remove and then reconnect the flylead on SW1. The LED will then start to count through the available programs i.e. 1 flash, pause, 2 flashes, pause, 3 flashes, pause, etc.
    5. When the LED has flashed the same number of times as the setting you want (e.g. You want setting 5, and it did 5 flashes), remove the Flylead from SW1 again, and then reconnect.
    6. The LED will then flash rapidly a number of times to show it has reprogrammed.
    7. Remove the Flylead from SW1 once more. The LED will flash to confirm it is programmed to the setting selected, the number of flashes corresponding again to the setting selected. This completes the reprogramming of the AMT12-2.
    8. If satisfied, disconnect and reconnect the 0V Connection and your AMT is ready for use.
    9. To select another setting, start from step 1 again.

Please note the above routine does assume you are using, and have connected, the Wiring Kit we supply with the AMT12-2.

If when you connect the Flying lead to SW1 the LED turns a constant Red, it will almost certainly be because you forgot to carry out step 1 first.  The unit must power-up with SW1 connected in order to enter programming mode.

“Needed something to keep my starter battery topped up from the solar panel when not on EHU. After various different ideas and numerous messages with David this item was installed and is working exactly as recommended. An excellent product.”

  2. Chris Evans

A fit and forget solution for me that keeps my starter battery in tip top condition. I am using this set to the lithium program and it works perfectly, keeping my starter battery at a reassuring 12.8v.
I especially like the override function whereby I can force the unit to supply charging to the starter battery even if there is no input source to the leisure batteries. A great backup for those times when you are out and about in the wild and you accidently run down your starter battery too low.

This product has been a saviour for me and has certainly saved me from having to replace the starter battery.
